Name: Jodian Blake
From: Manchester, Jamaica
Natural Since: September, 2008
Loc’d Since: August, 2012
DIYLocs: Why did you go natural and decide to loc your hair?
Jodian Blake: I went natural because I was tired of creaming and braiding my hair. I decided to loc my hair because I wanted a new look. After seeing how beautiful locs hair look on other people, I was inspired to try it out.
DIYLocs: What method did you use to loc your hair and how long did it take to install?
Jodian Blake: I went to the hairdresser with my hair braided (rope twist or senegalese twists). I used the locking in braid method. I took about 45 minutes to install. I selected this method because it was the only thing that was suitable for me at the time.
DIYLocs: How long did it take for your hair to loc up?
Jodian Blake: My hair took about 6 months to loc up.
DIYLocs: Would you do anything differently if you were to go back in time and start your dreadlocks again?
Jodian Blake: Not at all. I love my hair just the way it is.
DIYLocs: How often do you retighten your hair and what method do you use to retighten your roots?
Jodian Blake: I like my hair neat and clean so I retighten my hair every two weeks. I used the twist and pin method.
DIYLocs: What is your current hair regimen over the course of a month?
Jodian Blake: I wash my hair every week using the Purelene Egg and Protein Shampoo and Conditioner. I oil my scalp twice per week using Purelene Multivitamin Black Hair Grower. I also use the Jamaican Mango and Lime Locking Gel.
DIYLocs: What is your go-to dreadlocks hairstyle and how do you do it?
Jodian Blake: I am very fortunate to do my own hairstyles. I try to do styles that fit my face. I’m not sure how I do it but they all look beautiful.
DIYLocs: Has loc’d hair been easier or harder than relaxed or loose natural hair?
Jodian Blake: It has been easier for me. I spend less amount of time in my hair.
DIYLocs: How did you colour your hair and has your hair changed as a result? (if relevant)
Jodian Blake: I went to a hairdresser to colour the end of my hair. My hair still has the same texture so there was no change.
DIYLocs: Has having dreadlocks affected your personal or professional life/relationships in any way?
Jodian Blake: Before I locked my hair, people never spoke to me or recognise me as much as they do now. When I started looking my hair I was asked “Why are you locking your hair Jody?” I never really care what people think about me locking my hair. Now everywhere I go, people tell me how pretty and gorgeous my hair looks. Everyone wants to know who did my hair. They love it.
DIYLocs: Any encouraging words for people who have just started the journey?
Jodian Blake: First you have to love your hair. Don’t watch what other people think. Secondly, take one step at a time, don’t rush and ENJOY IT.
