Name: Cherlie D.
Occupation: Juvenile Services
Natural Since: 2005
Loc’d Since: Labor day 2009
DIYLocs: Why did you go natural and decide to loc your hair?
Cherlie D: I went natural due to a bad chemical burn from a relaxer. Decided to loc up because I loved the look and always admired those who fearlessly embraced the loc’d journey.
DIYLocs: What method did you use to loc your hair and how long did it take to install?
Cherlie D: I went with Sisterlocks after seeing a woman walk down the street in NY with Sisterlocks past the middle of her back. At first thought they were braids and she told me to check out the Sisterlocks website. I fell in love and knew it was the right choice for me. It took 2 days.
DIYLocs: How long did it take for your hair to loc up?
Cherlie D: It took about a year.
DIYLocs: Would you do anything differently if you were to go back in time and start your dreadlocks again?
Cherlie D: No. Take the same route. All part of my journey.
DIYLocs: How often do you retighten your hair and what method do you use to retighten your roots?
Cherlie D: I mainly use a latch hook (bought from Wal-Mart) and recently started using the O Locker tool (oraje.com). I retighten my locs every 4-5 weeks.
DIYLocs: What is your current hair regimen over the course of a month?
Cherlie D: I usually wash my locs every 2 weeks with black african soap or Shea Moisture Castor Oil Shampoo. Before blow drying locs on low heat, I use Infusium 23 Color Defender leave-in treatment and a small amount of coconut oil to seal in moisture. I grease my scalp 1-2 times per week with my own oil mix or pomade. Also, I use a refresher mix made with aloe vera, peppermint oil, rosemary, tea tree oil, & water as needed (such as, after a workout or around smoke).
DIYLocs: What is your go-to locs hairstyle and how do you do it?
Cherlie D: Curls, curls, and more curls. Accomplished with braids, perm rods, or my usual, Lock Loops. I rarely put my locs up.
DIYLocs: Has loc’d hair been easier or harder than relaxed or loose natural hair?
Cherlie D: Def easier and I take pride in maintaining my locs myself.
DIYLocs: How did you colour your hair and has your hair changed as a result?
Cherlie D: I’ve done highlights, ombre, and color blocking. No issues. I make sure to keep locs moisturized. Also, I used henna a few times when I wanted red.
DIYLocs: Has having dreadlocks affected your personal or professional life/relationships in any way?
Cherlie D: Personally, feel more comfortable in my skin. People notice the passion I have for locs. Locs aren’t just a hairstyle for me, it’s a way of life. I plan to start others’ loc’d journey and share what I’ve learned along the way.
DIYLocs: Any encouraging words for people who have just started the journey?
Cherlie D: Enjoy your journey and don’t compare your locs to others. Each set of locs is unique and beautiful in their own way.
DIYLocs: Thanks for doing this interview. Is there anywhere we can keep up with your hair journey online
