From: Nassau, Bahamas
Natural Since: November 2006
Loc’d Since: April 2007
DIYLocs: Why did you go natural and decide to loc your hair?
Crystal: My hair was damaged from getting perms so much so I thought that it would be in my best interest to go natural. I’ve loved how Locs look,so free and beautiful, plus they suit my personality so it was my first choice. It just felt right.
DIYLocs: What method did you use to loc your hair and how long did it take to install?
Crystal: I started with comb coils. I was told by my loctician at the time that it was the best method and it proved to be true. I had no issues with my hair once they were installed.
DIYLocs: How long did it take for your hair to loc up?
Crystal: It took my hair about 3 months. I thought it would have taken longer because I was also washing my hair in the early stages but it actually helped it along.
DIYLocs: Would you do anything differently if you were to go back in time and start your locs again?
Crystal: Yes. I would start them earlier and I would have made them bigger. I’ve joined a few to get a fuller look.
DIYLocs: What is your current hair regimen over the course of a month?
Crystal: Well I wash maybe 1-2 times a month with Donna Maries Superlatherlicious Shampoo. I condition with coconut oil and sometimes aloe Vera juice. I re-twist my hair while its damp or wet with Eco Styler gel or Gorilla snot 🙂
DIYLocs: What is your go-to locs hairstyle and how do you do it?
Crystal: My go to loc style is two strand loc twists. I retwist my hair and the twist two Locs in a counter clockwise motion and secure the ends with rubberbands. I can usually style it into something else like a bun or lobster tails when they are two strand twisted.
DIYLocs: Has loc’d hair been easier or harder than relaxed or loose natural hair?
Crystal: It’s been wayyyyyyyyyy easier. My loose natural hair was WORK.
DIYLocs: How did you colour your hair and has your hair changed as a result?
Crystal: I colored my hair without bleach, just the dye in the box. Let it sit for 35 minutes and it changes. I usually go for bright colors since my hair is super black, so that some colour shows.
DIYLocs: Has having locs affected your personal or professional life/relationships in any way?
Crystal: Not really. I’ve gotten a lot of compliments from guys I’ve dated and my current boyfriend loves them. Since I’ve had Locs I’ve started my own business and I love it! I think it has given me a lot of confidence to do things I thought were not possible.
DIYLocs: Any encouraging words for people who have just started the journey?
Crystal: Just do it. Don’t hesitate. Have fun with it. Don’t mind people who say that locs are not versatile. THEY ARE!
DIYLocs: Thanks for doing this interview. Is there anywhere we can keep up with your hair journey online?
