DIYLocs: Why did you go natural and decide to loc your hair?

Cardeen: I got tired of wearing an afro.

DIYLocs:  What method did you use to loc your hair and how long did it take to install?

Cardeen: I did two strand twists then interlocked the roits. I chose this method because that’s what everyone who I knew with locs did. I didn’t really research it.

DIYLocs: How long did it take for your hair to loc up?

Cardeen: It took awhile! I didn’t wash my hair for 3 months like they said and when I did it pulled right out. I actually started wearing it all waxed up to get it to lock but that caused a yucky build up.  So I begun palm rolling and interlocking it almost every week ti’l it eventually did.

DIYLocs: Would you do anything differently if you were to go back in time and start your dreadlocks again?

Cardeen: Yea I would make them a bit bigger. I think if my locs were a little thicker they’d be really cute.

DIYLocs: What is your current hair regimen over the course of a month?

Cardeen: I’m a natural products junkie.  I use all natural coconut oil,  shea butter and castor oil for treatment and sheen. To wash, I use Shea Moisture African black  soap balancing shampoo and conditioner. (I hope I got that right, I’m in bed & don’t wanna get up to check)

DIYLocs: What is your go-to locs hairstyle and how do you do it?

Cardeen: My Go-to locs hairstyle is to cornrow it over night then pull it out and wear my hair down

DIYLocs:  Has maintaining dreadlocks been easier or harder than relaxed or loose natural hair?

Cardeen: EASIER!!!

DIYLocs: How did you colour your hair and has your hair changed as a result?

Cardeen: I’ve rinsed and dyed my hair black and it was fine but after bleaching it a month ago it became very thin and easy to break 🙁  Still cute though!

DIYLocs: Any encouraging words for people who have just started the journey?

Cardeen: Ensure you research carefully to know exactly what you want. You need to know if you want thick, slim, freeformed, Sisterlocks or interlocks. Be strong and stick it out! The road will be fuzzy and it’ll seem as if there’s no progress but you will definitely be pleased in the long run.

DIYLocs: Thanks for doing this interview. Is there anywhere we can keep up with your hair journey online?
