On Christmas Eve, I decided to try a locs curling method that I have not visited in a very long time. My curly locs hairstyle used to last up to 2 weeks when set on perm rods. Recently, I’ve been lucky to get 4 days out of my foam-based loc loops. While the curls are beautiful, they have been harder to set and dry now that my locs have thickened up. This is what led me to try flexi rod sets once again to create the look before. Keep reading to learn a bit about how I did it.
Method for Curling Locs with Perm Rods
I washed and towel dried my locs for about 1 and a 1/2 hours then applied a light oil to my scalp and hair. I then let the oil sit and hopefully sink in for about 20 minutes.
Next, I applied the Curl Definer Mousse by Beautiful Textures which worked well on my loose natural hair. It was oils and very light. I thought it was worth a try since it is clear and not likely to cause any build-up in my locs. I applied the moose to each section individually before setting it on the rod.
My hair took two full days to air dry. Next time, I will blow dry my hair or sit under a dryer with my hair down for a few minutes before setting my dreadlocks on rollers with the hope that my hair will dry hair overnight. I won’t likely have 2 days to air dry my hair anytime soon. Having water in your locs for too long can cause bacteria growth. So, never hesitate to use the aid of indirect artificial heat to help you to speed up the drying process if needed.
Results and Hold
The style held up perfectly for the first 3 days. By day 4, there was significant fall in my curls. By day 6 and 7, my curls barely had a little curl at the ends. Still, my hair looked styled. I was my hair once and week and wouldn’t mind doing an updo on day 5 so I do believe this was a moderate success.
Although my hair responded well to the Curl Definer Mousse when it was loose, It doesn’t adde lot of hold to my locs. I’ll probably gift this one to my mother or someone else with loose hair. I will be testing out other holding agents (like Lottabody setting spray) to see whether I can get a full week or tighter curls.
I exercise everyday now and one would think that would be a problem in keeping a style, but my braid-outs last a full 7 days. I’ll get back to talk about my other curling adventures so stay tuned.
